Millions have benefited from belonging to a Boys & Girls Club since the first Club opened its doors in 1860. Based on research by Louis Harris & Associates, Club alumni have very strong feelings about their individual Club experiences:

85% said Club staff helped them learn right from wrong

90% indicated the Club was the best thing available in their community

57% said participating in the Club "saved my life"

It's a tough time to be a kid. There are pressures of peers, drugs, gangs, broken homes and overcrowding and the disadvantages circumstances of poor education, low income, unemployment, poor homes where love and attention are lacking. At the Boys & Girls Club, there is a place a child can go to get away. Away from those pressures and temptations. A place for some fun and companionship or just to hang out. And more often than not, once a child becomes a member, their life is positively changed forever.

The purpose is to help young people ages 5-18 improve their lives by building self-esteem and developing values and skills during their critical period of growth.

Services and programs provided focus on everything from education, social recreation, health and physical education, to leadership and citizenship development, cultural enrichment, and personal adjustment with one-on-one counseling.

"Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida: A 21st Century Learning Community"

The Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida has been given a 21st Century Learning Centers Grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its Taylor County based clubs. This government program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children (www.ed.gov). Currently, the Live Oak Club has a 21st Century Grant and has been given a continuance for the 2009-2010 year.

The grants will include many fun and educational learning tools and curriculum to enhance the after school program. These will include the Camelot Reading and Math Curriculums which use theme-based manipulative, crafts, and games. Based on the national Reading Panel best practices, these programs are approved under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) criteria for supplemental educational services. In addition, the clubs will also have individualized and group tutoring for low achieving students. Members will also be able to create their own characters with The Comic Book Club, do science experiments in ClubZOOM, learn scientific principles using LEGO education sets, learn robotics with the use of Mindstorm robotics, and much, much more.

The Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida takes the quality of the programs that are offered very seriously. Therefore, to ensure that programs and services offered through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant are of the very best quality, the BGCNCFL has contracted with an independent external evaluator to critique our overall program. The first of the formative evaluations was completed in January of 2010 and the results are available for public viewing during the hours of 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday at the Administrative Offices of the Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida located at 202 East Julia Drive, Perry, Florida.
