"Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida: A 21st Century Learning Community"

The Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida has been given a 21st Century Learning Centers Grant from the U.S. Department of Education for all four Club sites. This government program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children (www.ed.gov).

The grants will include many fun and educational learning tools and curriculum to enhance the after school program. These will include the Camelot Math Curriculum and LitArt LEARN which both use theme-based manipulative, crafts, and games. Based on the national Reading Panel best practices, these programs are approved under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) criteria for supplemental educational services. In addition, the clubs will also have individualized and group tutoring for low achieving students. Members will also be able to create their own characters with The Comic Book Club, do science experiments in ClubZOOM, learn scientific principles using LEGO education sets, learn robotics with the use of Mindstorm robotics, and much, much more.

The Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida takes the quality of the programs that are offered very seriously. Therefore, to ensure that programs and services offered through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant are of the very best quality, the BGCNCFL has contracted with an independent external evaluator, Parman Consulting, to critique our overall program on a periodic basis. The results of these reviews and evaluations are available for public viewing during the hours of 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday at the Administrative Offices of the Boys & Girls Club of North Central Florida located at 202 East Julia Drive, Perry, Florida.
